Google Chrome Blog: Browse for a good cause

Google’s Chrome community is making it very easy to do something good this Holiday Season. The new Chrome for a Cause extension will keep tabs (haha) on how many tabs you open while browsing the web every day between Dec. 15 and Dec. 19. At the end of each day, you can choose to contribute your accumulated tabs to one of five worthy causes:

  • The Nature Conservancy
  • Charity: Water
  • Doctors Without Borders
  • Un Techo para mi Pais
  • Room to Read

Google will keep track of everyone’s donated Tabs, and will make a charitable donation, up to 1 million dollars, to aid these organizations. The extension shows you how many Tabs you’ve opened, and if you click on it, it will tell you how much your Tabs are presently “worth” – right now I have just 26, which equates to 2.6 trees planted through The Nature Conservancy.

If you are like me, and your job pretty much entails living on the web, try this Extension out. If you’re not on Chrome, now’s a great time to try, too. And try not to just click through links  you follow… CTRL-Click those suckers, and it will help you accumulate new Tabs!

Right-clicking a link, and selecting either “Open link in  new tab” or “Open link in new window” also counts for another Tab for your tally.

Its simply amazing that Google has created this campaign to do a social good. I chose and recommend to donate your Tab points to square “feet of shelter” of Un Techo para mi Pais. It is a Youth Based NGO that its main focus is to create opportunities for families living in extreme poverty… they start this opportunities by building along with the families a home for them. The second stage is creating social inclusion programs an social development programs that leads them to emerge out of poverty by creating sustainable communities… and believe that the best part of it, I it is the Youth doing this change, which in the future they will be the decision makers of our world. So we now can trust that they will make the right choices in the future for a better tomorrow for most of the people and not only a few..
